ITINERARY OVERVIEW

The Lemosho Route is a scenic and less crowded path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, renowned for its diverse landscapes and breathtaking views. This 7-day itinerary takes you through lush rainforests, vast moorlands, and alpine desert, allowing for optimal acclimatization. The route begins on the western side of the mountain and merges with the Machame Route, offering a memorable and rewarding journey to Uhuru Peak.

DAY TO DAY ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi

  • Altitude: 880 meters (2,887 feet)
  • Accommodation: Budget hotel in Moshi
  • Meals: Dinner
  • Overview: Arrive in Moshi, the vibrant town nestled at the base of Kilimanjaro. Meet your fellow trekkers and guides for a briefing, ensuring you’re well-prepared for the adventure ahead. Enjoy a hearty dinner and a comfortable night’s rest.

Day 2: Lemosho Glades to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp

  • Altitude: 2,650 meters (8,694 feet)
  • Hiking Distance: 8 kilometers (5 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
  • Accommodation: Mti Mkubwa Camp (Budget tents)
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Description: The journey begins as you drive to the Lemosho Gate and trek through lush rainforests, witnessing an array of flora and fauna. The trail gradually ascends to Mti Mkubwa Camp, where you’ll spend the night in cozy tents amidst the forest.

Day 3: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

  • Altitude: 3,505 meters (11,500 feet)
  • Hiking Distance: 11 kilometers (6.8 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 6-7 hours
  • Accommodation: Shira 1 Camp (Budget tents)
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Description: Today’s hike takes you out of the rainforest and into the heath and moorland zone. The trail offers panoramic vistas of the Shira Plateau and Mount Meru. The Shira 1 Campsite awaits you, where you’ll settle in and rest for the night.

Day 4: Shira 1 Camp to Moir Hut

  • Altitude: 4,200 meters (13,780 feet)
  • Hiking Distance: 14 kilometers (8.7 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
  • Accommodation: Moir Hut (Budget tents)
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Description: The hike today introduces you to the alpine desert as you venture towards Moir Hut. This less-traveled path offers an invigorating experience with remarkable landscapes. Moir Hut is perched at the base of Lent Hills, providing stunning sunset views.

Day 5: Acclimatization at Moir Hut

  • Altitude: 4,200 meters (13,780 feet)
  • Accommodation: Moir Hut (Budget tents)
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Description: Spend the day at Moir Hut for proper acclimatization. Embark on a short hike up Lent Hills to enhance your adaptation to the altitude. This strategic rest day increases your chances of summit success.

Day 6: Moir Hut to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

  • Altitude: 3,960 meters (13,000 feet) at Lava Tower, descend to 3,950 meters (12,959 feet) at Barranco Camp
  • Hiking Distance: 12 kilometers (7.5 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 6-7 hours
  • Accommodation: Barranco Camp (Budget tents)
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Description: Begin the day with a steep ascent to Lava Tower, providing crucial altitude exposure. Descend to Barranco Camp, traversing the unique Barranco Wall. The campsite offers splendid views of the Kibo summit.

Day 7: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp

  • Altitude: 4,673 meters (15,331 feet)
  • Hiking Distance: 9 kilometers (5.6 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
  • Accommodation: Barafu Camp (Budget tents)
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Description: The trail leads through the alpine desert, and the challenge of the day prepares you for the final ascent. Reach Barafu Camp, the high camp, and rest in anticipation of the summit push.

Note: Budget accommodations provide necessary comforts for trekkers. Acclimatization is key, and listening to your body’s signals is crucial for a successful climb. This itinerary is a guide; actual conditions might vary based on weather, group dynamics, and other factors. Summit night can be particularly challenging; mental fortitude and determination will propel you to Uhuru Peak.
